Book Pet Peeves: Miscategorization on Amazon

Book Pet Peeves is a feature where I do a mini-rant about bookish things that annoy me. Feel free to join in!

pardontherantFor the most part, I’m pretty supportive of self publishing authors. I guess I’m supportive of the ones who do it right.

One of the more annoying things self publishing authors have been doing recently is miscategorizing their book on Amazon. What I mean by that is they ‘tag’ or use keywords on their books that really have no relevance to the book.

I’m not talking about a little debate on where a book might be placed (fantasy vs science fiction). I’m seeing some really obvious ploys for attention.

Book Pet Peeves: Feeling Abandoned

Self-publishing is definitely shaping the bookish world and the publishing world. There are some good aspects to it but there are bad aspects as well. One of the coolest things for me is the author is in complete control of their books. They see what sells and what doesn’t. They can give their fans more as quickly as they’d like to. They don’t have to wait for a publisher to help them publish the next books.

Book Blogging Pet Peeves: Weird Review Requests

Book (Blogging) Pet Peeves is a feature where I do a mini-rant about book blogging things that annoy me. Feel free to join in! pardontherant Review requests are almost like a rite of passage for book bloggers. It doesn’t take long before you to start getting requests no matter how small the blog. I think I was blogging for a month before I got my first request. It’s awesome though because bloggers and authors can work together really well if they want to. I’m sure we all have had good experiences with authors.

Book Pet Peeves: Unresolved Stories

Like many readers I’m a bit of a series fanatic. I don’t even think that’s a full view of all the series I’ve tried.

One of my biggest annoyances with some series books is the lack of proper endings. For me, a good series should have two story arcs. There’s the overarching link for all the books. Then each book has its own story arc.

When I finish a book, I shouldn’t feel cheated and confused.  I should have resolution with one part of the story but I should faced with a new conflict (or the possibility of one) as well as the overarching problem of the series.

I’m a blog skimmer. I’m more than happy to admit it. I follow quite a few blogs so it’s tough to read everything. I’ve found skimming over blog posts to be pretty effect for finding the posts that I want to read completely. This especially goes for new blogs. I do enjoy skimming through a new-to-me blog and looking at what the blogger writes. I’ve noticed quite a few bloggers not utilizing the ‘read more’ tag on their posts. For those who don’t know, the ‘read more’ tag simply allows for a break in a blog post. The reader can see as much as the blogger wants and then needs to click the ‘continue reading’ link to continue reading the post.

I love comments. What blogger doesn’t? I’ve been trying to be better at returning comments for bloggers who have left comments on my blog. Lately I’ve been running into problems on some of those blogs though. There’s no easy way to leave a comment!

I was initially excited at the idea of New Adult books. I still really like the idea. As someone who’s trying to figure out what to do with my life, I like the idea of reading about others who are making similar decisions.  Unfortunately that’s not really what New Adult has turned out to be.

This is a sampling of what you find labeled “New Adult” on Goodreads.
