What I Want To See More Of (3)

I thought it would be fun to talk about what I as a reader would like to see more of in Young Adult (and Middle Grade) books.

Upstairs/Downstairs Drama

I’m on a bit of a Downton Abbey kick at the moment.  I love me some drama so the historical drama in the show is fantastic. I love the two different types of drama we see in the story. Upstairs is all about finding the right husband, wearing the right clothes, making the right friends, etc. Downstairs drama typically involves other members of the staff, wanting a better life, and the normal drama of life. I’d love to see more books with those elements in it. I know they pop up in adult fiction but I don’t see much in Young Adult fiction.

Creative Special Schools or Camps

I’m a total sucker for books involving special schools or camps. Normals schools/camps like you and I would have gone to can be a bit boring but special ones are an extra level of fun (and world building) for me. Examples of special schools/camps? Hogwarts is all about teaching young wizards/witches magic, Camp Half-Blood teaches demi-gods skills they need to stay alive, the school in Storybound has characters taking classes to teach them skills they need to be the type of character they are, Ever After High helps students prepare for their destinies, and the list goes on.

I’d like to see more schools/camps like that but I would love to see more creative ideas as well. School to be an assassin? Spyology homework? Flying lessons after you’re done with homework? You get the idea. There are tons of ideas out there.

 Space Travel or Space Colonization

I’m thinking something along the lines of Firefly or even space colonization like in the Chaos Walking Trilogy. Outer Space is huge! Aliens don’t even need to be involved. Why aren’t there more space books? There are new worlds to be discovered! What’s it going to be like on other planets? What’s it like on spaceships? The possibilities are endless.
