This was a landslide decision thanks to a retweet by an author.

We’re reading Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld in August!

Ready for September’s choices?

So You Want To Be A Wizard by Diane Duane [YA Fantasy]

Something stopped Nita’s hand as it ran along the bookshelf. She looked and found that one of the books had a loose thread at the top of its spine. It was one of those So You Want to Be a . . . books, a series on careers. So You Want to Be a Pilot, and a Scientist . . . a Writer. But this one said, So You Want to Be a Wizard.
I don’t believe this, Nina thought. She shut the book and stood there holding it in her hand, confused, amazed, suspicious–and delighted. If it was a joke, it was a great one. If it wasn’t…?

Spindle’s End by Robin McKinley [YA Fantsy/Fairy Tale Re-Telling]

All the creatures of the forest and field and riverbank knew the infant was special. She was the princess, spirited away from the evil fairy Pernicia on her name-day. But the curse was cast: Rosie was fated to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a poisoned sleep-a slumber from which no one would be able to rouse her.

Matilda by Roald Dahl [Children’s Fantasy?]

For most kids, The Trunchbull is pure terror, but for Matilda, she’s a sitting duck.

Who put superglue in Dad’s hat? Was it really a ghost that made Mom tear out of the house? Matilda is a genius with idiot parents—and she’s having a great time driving them crazy. But at school things are different. At school there’s Miss Trunchbull, two hundred menacing pounds of kid-hating headmistress. Get rid of The Trunchbull and Matilda would be a hero. But that would take a superhuman genius, wouldn’t it?

All summaries come from Goodreads.

I’ve wanted to read So You Want To Be A Wizard and Spindle’s End for quite a while now. I got them both for my birthday so I know I’ll get to them at some point. I’ve continually heard good things about both books so I though they would be great BHA picks. I’ve read Matilda many times. It’s yet another beloved book and I’m still working on my Roald Dahl challenge so it’s a hit all around!

How are you coming along with July’s BHA book, Little House On The Prairie?

  1. Great picks! I love Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies and Midnighters series, but I haven’t read Leviathan. Might have to join you for that one. 🙂 I don’t know if I could read Matilda, though, having already seen the movie. You know what I mean?

    • I’ve read Uglies but haven’t tried Midnighters yet. Hope to you decide to join in! Well, the book is good too! The movie sticks out more in my mind though.

  2. I read The “So you want to be a wizard” series as a kid; it was my favourite and I still remember it being fantastic. (I think I mentioned it to you on twitter or sent a GR recommendation for it). Great one to put on the voting list
