Movie Review: “Peter Pan (2003)”

“Peter Pan”

Source: Netflix

Summary from IMDB:

The Darling family children receive a visit from Peter Pan, who takes them to Never Never Land where an ongoing war with the evil Pirate Captain Hook is taking place.

I appreciated that a good portion of the movie was faithful to the book. Especially in the beginning, there were some things that were taken directly out of the book. Hooray for not totally twisting the story! The movie was quite exciting. There was a lot of swashbuckling and action. Once again, it’s totally on par for the intended audience.

This Wendy felt like she had a bit more backbone than other versions. Wendy seems to always come across a very good girl: sweet and gentle, very motherly, takes care of her brothers (and the lost boys). There’s nothing wrong with that but it’s a bit boring for a character. This Wendy was a bit more exiting. Before they went to Neverland, she ran around and played with her brothers. It’s not very ladylike but it is fun. This Peter was more like the one in the book. He’s not totally selfish but I wouldn’t say he looks out for the others like Wendy does. He’s just like a ‘normal’ boy.

The bottom line? This was a pretty good, straightforward adaption of the book.

  1. I have a real soft spot for this version in very large part thanks to Jason Isaacs who is perfectly cast as Hook/Darling IMHO. 🙂
