This is inspired by Erin Reads’ Reading Buddies as well as other read-alongs I’ve seen on other book blogs.
As much as I enjoy reading and would like to join a book club in real life, various things keep me from doing so. I’m terribly shy around people I don’t know, I’m not able to go when the club is held, I can’t find one that reads what I’m interested it, etc.
To get around this problem I thought I would start my own little book club of sorts here on my blog. I really like the way Erin runs Reading Buddies so I’m going to use many of the same ideas. 1 book a month and everyone has the entire month to read the book. You can post a book review on your own blog, just thoughts about the book on your blog, or you can even comment with your thoughts on my post. You don’t have to commit to the whole club. You can do just the months/books that interest you. I want this to be easy and flexible as possible.
I’d announce the book ahead of time so people could get a hold of it in time. The first day of the month, I think I’ll post an “official announcement” so everyone’s on the same page. That announcement can be used for discussions about the book or a place for fellow readers can leave a link to his/her thoughts or review. I’d post my review/thoughts later in the month. Then everyone can hop around to other people’s thoughts/reviews.
I’m not 100% sure what types of books we would be reading. I have some classics that I would like to read but I don’t know how much I would enjoy them on my “own”. I read The Woman in White with Erin’s Reading Buddies and really enjoyed it because it was nice to be able to talk to others reading the book at the same time. I didn’t feel so alone and that kept me reading when I might have quit if I was on my own. There might be some modern books thrown in as well that I’d like to read with people. More than likely I’ll put a poll up for people to vote on for the next month’s book. If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you know how I’m a bit all over the place with what I read so chances are the book club will be too. Just some rough ideas for books: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis, maybe even Harry Potter in the Sorcerer’s Stone just for fun.
I was just wondering how many of you would be interested in participating if I started this? Ideas/suggestions/thoughts are appreciated. I’ll have to work on coming up with a snazzy name… (Pick of the Month? Bookworms? )
Thanks for the idea, Erin! I hope you don’t mind that I’m using the same ideas. If you do mind, email me and we can figure something else out.
