Style Saturday is a meme hosted by me where each week I present a prompt about reading style and explain my answer. Feel free to join in with your answer in the comments or leave a link to your Style Saturday on your blog.

This week: Silence and Reading
Are you the type of person who needs silence when you read?
Or can you read while there’s lot of noise around you?
I guess I’ve become more easily distracted as I’ve gotten older. I can’t read while the TV is on, people are talking, or there’s just a lot of general ‘noise’ going on. As you can imagine this makes things incredibly difficult if I’m waiting somewhere like an appointment. Generally I close myself off in my room to read so I’m not bothered by too much noise. I’ve discovered I now have a hard time listening to music and reading. It throws me off and distracts me a bit! Now I can only manage it in the car when I’m using it more for blocking out other noise.
How about you?

I couldn’t read yesterday, because we had a very warm day and one bird was singing! xD
I can read if the background noises are just like one monotonous tone, but if someone begins to talk loud or cough, or playing rhythm with pen… no chances…
Haha, we have really annoying birds at my house.
If I’m in my house, I need quiet. However, I can read if there is a “hum” of noise (like a waiting room or outside with cars driving by).
I forgot about a ‘hum’. I can usually handle that.
OMG I was JUST dealing with this this morning. I moved back in with my parents a few months ago (thank goodness I’m moving out again in a couple weeks though!) and was trying to read this morning in the living room. My mom WOULD NOT stop talking to me and I finally just had to give up! I can deal with the TV on if there are other people watching it, I can deal with reading in like a waiting room with others having conversations… but when conversations are to me or by people who I know it totally distracts me and I have a hard time concentrating. My attention span is already pretty short, so when I get distracted pshh… it flies out the window .
That’s terrible! That’s also why I only read in my room at home. If I’m not in my room, my family decides my reading time is the best time to talk to me.
I need silence when I read. but I also have 4 kids that make that very hard. lol I should really invest in some ear plugs. I also live right in the vicinity of a train station, major highway, and an airport. lol
Oh man! How do you ever get reading done? haha
I’ve perfected the art of “zoning out”. lol
For the most part, I can only read in silence, but if I’m at the library or somewhere where people are talking in the background, I usually can still read. I might be slower, but I can do it. As for TV, I’ll read while my husband watches sports, but if a TV show I like comes on, there’s no way I can concentrate!
Yeah, I don’t understand how anyone can hear the TV and read!
I just did it yesterday. I was laying head to TV, it was about 40 cm between and actually was okay xD
Nicely done!
yeah! xD
But I still prefer silence xD
Absolutely!
I don’t mind noise at all. If I’m hooked into the book I can easily ignore anything that’s going around and just read. Music, however, can’t have any words in it while I’m reading or else it’ll throw me off. (also, sup missy)
Interesting. I can listen to whatever I want. Words don’t throw me off.
I prefer quiet or white noise, but I have the weird habit of reading in front of the TV. Often my husband will put something on and I’ll sit with him and read a book. This really only works for me if the book is more interesting than the TV show, though!
My mom does that with my dad all the time! I’d go crazy with the TV on.
